I attended "Move into More Expressive Conducting" at the NYSSMA Winter Conference. In this session, we learned that any music teacher can just give every beat to their ensemble(s) when they're conducting but doing so doesn't only lack musicality but also robs students of opportunities to build upon their musicianship, musicality, internalization of music, and even critical thinking. We went over a few popular scores for intermediate ensembles and discovered how musical we can be with our conducting. The award for best pace goes to this session. Jennifer McDonel and Richard Victor kept us engaged the entire time. Other sessions were very dull, to say the least. Just lots of bulleted powerpoint slides and even more talking. This was real hands-on stuff!
